I first started at the Bemidji (Minn.) Pioneer as an intern in the summer of 1996. That would begin six years as a news reporter, sports reporter and copy editor for a small, six-day-per-week daily newspaper in northern Minnesota. I wrote a large range of stories from multiple beats, to features to sports, my favorite being the coverage of the Red Lake Reservation High School basketball team named the Warriors. Here is a collection of my stories from my time at the Pioneer.

A Bena woman was arraigned in Cass County District Court Friday on assault charges for allegedly stabbing another Bena woman in an incident Thursday, according to Cass County Sheriff Jim Dowson.
Julie Goose-Weyaus, 19, was charged with a count of second-degree aggravated assault and a count of third-degree aggravated assault, Dowson said.
Her bond was set at $10,000 and her next court date was set for Sept. 20.
Goose-Weyaus is accused of sending another woman to the Cass Lake Indian Health Service Hospital Thursday with stab wounds to the face.
Dowson said the alleged victim received the injuries in a "domestic" fight with Goose-Weyaus, who is possibly the victim's sister. The incident occurred about 7:30 a.m. Thursday in Bena.
The stabbing victim was reported in stable condition Thursday.
