Criminal sexual conduct charges still pending for BSU student in UMD case

Starting in early 1994, I worked for my first-ever newspaper, The Northern Student, the student newspaper at Bemidji State University, where I attended and received my bachelor's degree in mass communication. Over three years, I would be a staff writer, news editor, managing editor and editor. I wrote everything from news stories to feature stories to sports stories to opinion pieces. It was the greatest training ground a journalist could ever have, and I am grateful to the many talented people I worked alongside in my years at The NS.

Charges of first degree criminal sexual conduct against a BSU hockey player and a University of Minnesota-Duluth hockey player are still pending lab results. The charges stem from an alleged incident March 26, on the UMD campus.

'We are still working on the fine tuning of the case," said Harry Michalicek, UMD campus police captain. "We hope that we can have the case to the county attorney by (Wednesday) morning."

The two suspects reportedly entered the victim's unlocked dorm apartment and did not tell her who they were. The two men allegedly removed her clothing and raped her repeatedly. On the way out of the dorm, the two men encountered one of the victim's roommates, who talked to the suspects and commented later that they seemed eager to leave. Upon entering the apartment, the roommate found the victim nude and crying in her room. The roommate contacted the campus police who took the victim to the hospital.
