I first started at the Bemidji (Minn.) Pioneer as an intern in the summer of 1996. That would begin six years as a news reporter, sports reporter and copy editor for a small, six-day-per-week daily newspaper in northern Minnesota. I wrote a large range of stories from multiple beats, to features to sports, my favorite being the coverage of the Red Lake Reservation High School basketball team named the Warriors. Here is a collection of my stories from my time at the Pioneer.

Northern Minnesota deer hunters won't have snow to track their prey during opening weekend, but they won't have to endure the temperatures associated with snow either.
According to Becky Griffis, an intern meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, N.D., temperatures should remain seasonal, if not warmer, this weekend and no precipitation is expected.
"There's high pressure coming in, meaning there's no precipitation," Griffis said. "All in all, it should be a nice weekend."
Today should be mostly sunny, windy and cooler, she said, with highs around 40 degrees. Wind should gust between 20 to 30 mph.
Conditions should settle Saturday, with highs between 45 to 50 degrees and lows dipping to 20. No precipitation is expected.
Sunday should be much of the same, with no precipitation and a mild afternoon expected. The high of the day should climb to between 50 to 55 and even the low will be warmer at near 30 degrees.
The dry and mild conditions are expected to continue through next week with nights remaining chilly and afternoons seasonal. No major storm is expected in the near future.
"It's going to be nice and dry," Griffis said, adding the mild weather isn't atypical yet.
"This time of the year is our driest time of the year," she said. "But a 30-day period without precipitation might be a little unusual."
Average temperatures for the is time of year in the Bemidji region were unavailable. But in Grand Forks, the average high for Nov. 7 is 40 degrees, and the low is 23. In Fargo, N.D., the average high for Nov. 7 is 43 degrees, and the low is 24.
