Finding Faith ... in celebrating a divinely inspired resurrection

Jesus sets the example of service in his humble act of washing his disciples' feet.

In the Gospel of John, the author describes the scene of Jesus washing the feet of his disciples.

Taking place on Maundy Thursday, or Holy Thursday, Jesus’ act sets the example for how Christians are to love one another.

Jesus tells them: “Do you know what I have done to you? You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for that is what I am. So if I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have set you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you.”

Jesus’ humble act is this kind of service on which Churches United was formed 38 years ago when it set out on its mission to serve every neighbor.

Almost four decades later, this venerable organization now provides safe shelter, stable housing, nutritious food and a path to healing for 500 of our neighbors every single day.

And we couldn’t do it without your support.

Every dollar you invest; every time you volunteer to serve a meal, or sort clothing, or help a client shop at our food pantry; and every time you say a prayer on our behalf, you are getting down on bended knee to help wash the disciples’ feet just like Jesus did.

Words aren’t adequate to share how grateful each member of our staff is for your continued generosity.

Eight months ago, it would have seemed impossible to write this. But it is Holy Week, after all, and we as faithful people know that divine miracles do happen!

This coming Easter Sunday, April 20, we are inviting you to come celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ with us … right here at the Community Center in Micah’s Mission, 1901 1st Ave. N. in Moorhead.

As we considered how to observe this Easter, we were inspired to celebrate our own divinely inspired resurrection as an organization on this high point in the Christian calendar. On the day that the stone was rolled away from the tomb, and Jesus demonstrated for us all that he conquered death for all time.

At noon on Easter Sunday, we will gather together -- guests, staff, and community members … all are welcome! -- as one collective assembly, to celebrate Christ and also to commemorate our first Easter since our community picked us up out of the dust and washed our feet, giving us the opportunity to continue to serve our neighbors for years to come.

During this brief community Easter worship, we will share music, the Easter gospel and we’ll take communion together. There will be Easter treats for the little ones, fellowship for all and joy will abound!

This Easter, please come celebrate with all of us!

Could there be a more joyful and appropriate day to commemorate our community’s support that has allowed Churches United to experience its own powerful resurrection!

Christ is risen! He is risen indeed!
