My wife loves men's college basketball. ... I mean LOVES it!
Right now, as I sit in my living room after a busy week resting on a Saturday morning, my wife Shelley is simultaneously watching four games at once. One game on the main living room TV, one on a smaller TV that I brought up from my Nerdy Room, one on her laptop and one on her phone.
Oh, yes, and she's having me monitor a fifth game on my computer. Every now and then, she shouts over her shoulder to ask the score.
From about October and on through March, my wife's obsession takes over. ... How badly, you might ask?
Well, if you were to see the short hallway that leads from our bedroom to our bathroom, it is wallpapered with 8.5 X 11 sheets of paper that contain the schedules of all of her favorite teams. And about every other day she goes to update them, writing down key wins and losses for each team. ... I promise, this is no joke.
And on the weekends when we don't have our children, or their activities aren't driving our schedule, our schedule revolves around the college basketball schedule. ... Like today.
So, being there were four games that she needed to watch all at the same time, she asked me to come up with a solution.
Now, sometimes, when there are a couple of games going on at the same time, there is a great little sports bar here in town called Moorhead Billiards. And believe it or not they've come to think my wife's college basketball obsession is so cute that they will allow us to come in, and they will actually dedicate two of their TVs to my wife. ... No, seriously, this happens.
Well, this morning, there were four games at once. And I didn't think that they were going to allow her to take over four of their TVs ... all at once. So I had to improvise something.
My wife had some morning commitments that she need to tackle, and so while she was out of the house, I set up her little command post. One large family room TV, one small TV, a laptop and her phone. I pulled her favorite recliner into the middle of it all for her, and got her favorite blankets ready. ... This is what my life has become!
All in all, this is probably better for everyone. ... You cannot believe how much my tiny wife screams when her teams are winning. ... And, frankly, you cannot believe how much more my wife screams when they are not. If the kids are home, they'll often come out of their rooms to tell their mom she's being too loud. ... True story.
But this morning it's all good. It's just the two of us, and the five pets who are all watching their pet mom's strange behaviors while staring at the television. It's quite comical.
On the bright side, Shelley was so giddy over her little command post set up that I created for her games this morning, that I got the "your-the-best" husband smile that always warms my heart.
So, if you're ever looking for a good time on a Saturday afternoon between the months of October and March, feel free to drop into Moorhead Billiards and catch the show. Even if you're not a men's college basketball fan, you can always watch my wife watching men's college basketball. And that might be even more entertaining.
And that is why today, I am finding faith in my wife's college basketball obsession.
