I first started at the Bemidji (Minn.) Pioneer as an intern in the summer of 1996. That would begin six years as a news reporter, sports reporter and copy editor for a small, six-day-per-week daily newspaper in northern Minnesota. I wrote a large range of stories from multiple beats, to features to sports, my favorite being the coverage of the Red Lake Reservation High School basketball team named the Warriors. Here is a collection of my stories from my time at the Pioneer.

A two-vehicle accident at about 2:40 p.m. Monday resulted in one death and left two people hospitalized, according to Nancy Olson, a radio communications officer for the State Patrol office in Thief River Falls.
The crash took place about two miles south of the junction of Highways 2 and 71 and involved a Bemidji resident and two Guthrie residents.
Albert Henry Carroll, 72, of 1316 Beltrami Ave. N.W. was southbound on Highway 71 when his white, 1985 Chevrolet Celebrity veered into the oncoming lane and collided head on with a Blue 1984-Plymouth van, reported Olson.
The van was driven by Jeremie Matthew Marlowe, 27, of Guthrie, and his wife, Carmen Rachelle Marlowe, 23, was a passenger.
Carroll was dead at the scene of the accident, Olson said, and it was unknown whether he was wearing a seat belt.
The Marlowes both were wearing seat belts, reported Olson, and they sustained various injuries. "It sounds like he sustained a lot of leg injuries," she said.
The couple was taken to North Country Regional Hospital.
"He was treated and is in the hospital," said a hospital spokeswoman, "and she was also treated and admitted." No further information on their condition was available Monday evening.
Both vehicles involved were totaled, and the accident is under further investigation.
