Suspect arrested in Bena stabbing

I first started at the Bemidji (Minn.) Pioneer as an intern in the summer of 1996. That would begin six years as a news reporter, sports reporter and copy editor for a small, six-day-per-week daily newspaper in northern Minnesota. I wrote a large range of stories from multiple beats, to features to sports, my favorite being the coverage of the Red Lake Reservation High School basketball team named the Warriors. Here is a collection of my stories from my time at the Pioneer.

A 28-year-old Bena woman was hospitalized at the Cass Lake Indian Health Service Hospital in Cass Lake Thursday after allegedly being stabbed several times in the face, according to Cass County Sheriff Jim Dowson.

He said the woman received the injuries in a "domestic" fight with a female relative, possibly a sister. The incident occurred about 7:30 a.m. Thursday in Bena, he added.

The sheriff's department arrested a 19-year-old Bena woman Thursday on assault charges in connection with the incident.

Dowson said the names of the victim and the alleged attacker are being withheld pending formal charges in Cass County District Court.
