I first started at the Bemidji (Minn.) Pioneer as an intern in the summer of 1996. That would begin six years as a news reporter, sports reporter and copy editor for a small, six-day-per-week daily newspaper in northern Minnesota. I wrote a large range of stories from multiple beats, to features to sports, my favorite being the coverage of the Red Lake Reservation High School basketball team named the Warriors. Here is a collection of my stories from my time at the Pioneer.

It may feel a lot like Christmas, but it isn't going to look like it any time soon, according to the National Weather Service.
Weather patterns should hold through this weekend and the beginning of next week, NWS forecaster Al Voelker said, leaving the region with normal temperatures and bare ground.
Northwest Minnesota's weather continues to be produced by a flow of dry, westerly air, much as it has for weeks, Voelker said. The air, which is full of moisture when it comes ashore on the West Coast, loses all of its precipitation crossing the Rocky Mountains.
Temperatures should begin cooling today, but should remain consistent through most of next week, which is normal for this time of year with highs averaging 28 and lows averaging 12.
Today, the sun should peek through the clouds and the region should see a high near 30 degrees. The win at 20 to 30 mph should make it feel cooler, however.
Sunday, Monday and Tuesday look much the same with highs in between 30 to 35 degrees and lows about 15.
Rain or snow might fall as early as Tuesday night, and precipitation may fall through Thursday.
"Temperatures will continue to be at or above normal for this time of year," Voelker said. "And it's not highly unusual not to have snow yet. Once you get into December, the further you go without snow, it would get unusual."
