In the summer of 1995, I worked a three month internship at The Warroad Pioneer, which I'm sorry to say has since ceased operation. This was the first professional newspaper that I worked for in my career, and it turned out to be a wonderful experience. I had only worked at Bemidji State University's newspaper for about a year and half before landing the internship. At The Pioneer I gained experience in sports, feature, beat and government reporting. I designed pages, took and developed photographs and was responsible for community relations. The best part is that I remain friends with the owners nearly 30 years later.

The Warroad Board of Education was so busy last week that it took them two meetings to finish their business: one meeting to hire the new community education/activities director for the school district, and another for the rest of their business.
The Board met in a special session Monday, July 10, to interview the candidates for the position of community education/activities director. Board member Brian Hardwick motioned to employ Warren Keller to the position. The motion was passed, and Keller will assume the position as of July 17. Dick Myers has been serving as the interim community education/activities director.
Later on that same evening the Board met in a regular session and finished the rest of their business.
The Board approved the June student activity claims in the amount of $40,700.46.
The Truth in Taxation Hearing was set for Monday, Dec. 11, 1995 at 7 p.m. in the High School Library.
The Board approved the School Nutrition Programs Application which is necessary for the school in order for it to participate in the national school lunch program. In his agenda comments to the Board, Superintendent John Reishus stated that the "primary advantages" to joining the program are "the receipt of federal commodities, state reimbursement, federal reimbursement and reimbursement for free and or reduced priced meals." He added that "this is the only program which benefits all families participating in that all meals are substituted in one way or another.
The Board voted to open all bids for the school district's vehicle insurance on Aug. 14, at 7 a.m. There was also a motion made to advertise for the district's vehicle fuel bids, but the motion was retracted.
Mary Kay Cole was hired as a teacher assistant and will start Sept. 5. Janet Landby was also hired for a noon hour assistant position which will also take effect Sept. 5.
The Board also approved the extra curricular assignments that were recommended by Dick Myers, acting activities director. Steve Bengtson was named the head football coach with Warren Keller, Allen Rybolt and Brad Nash being his assistant coaches. Three junior high football coaching positions were awarded to Ron Tveit, Terry Sadler and Lee Furuseth, with a fourth position still left vacant.
The head volleyball coach will be Dawn Knoll, and her assistant will be Carrie Wallace. The ninth, eighth and seventh grade coaching positions are vacant.
The cross country coach will be Rick McBride, and the girls swimming coach will be Paul Schaper.
