I first started at the Bemidji (Minn.) Pioneer as an intern in the summer of 1996. That would begin six years as a news reporter, sports reporter and copy editor for a small, six-day-per-week daily newspaper in northern Minnesota. I wrote a large range of stories from multiple beats, to features to sports, my favorite being the coverage of the Red Lake Reservation High School basketball team named the Warriors. Here is a collection of my stories from my time at the Pioneer.

As if the Beavers women's basketball ranks hadn't been trimmed enough by injuries, starting guard Andrea Fischer received a broken nose in a scrimmage during Tuesday's practice.
That left the Beavers with exactly eight active players, and only three perimeter players.
That lack of depth caused most of BSU's problems in their Wednesday night 93-78 loss to Southwest State.
Because of the lack of guards, BSU had to play mostly a zone defense, and the Mustangs picked it apart.
But before the game got out of control, the Beavers did play some promising offense, maybe their best in two months, according to BSU head coach Doreen Zierer.
The loss dropped the Beavers to 10-17 overall and 3-9 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, and left them in sole possession of last place in the conference.
